STEM Academy Application Deadline

May 1, 2019

June 17 – 21, 2019

9 a.m. to Noon

Application Deadline – May 1

Camp acceptance notifications sent – May 15

Cost $25.00 (For those not selected, reimbursements will be distributed after May 15).

Fee waivers are available if the cost of camp is a financial burden.

The fourth annual STEM Academy is an amazing week-long experience sponsored by Pearl Technology, Richwoods Township and  University of Illinois Extension, Fulton-Mason-Peoria-Tazewell Unit.

At this year’s STEM Academy, we will be working with autonomous cars.  The students will assemble and program AWS (Amazon Web Services) DeepRacer cars.  The DeepRacer is a 1/18th scale car that uses Artificial Intelligence to drive itself.  The students will learn about Reinforcement Learning, a subset of Machine Learning, and will use tools on AWS to teach their cars how to navigate a race track.  This is not remote-control racing.  It is teaching a vehicle how to recognize its surroundings and drive itself without human intervention.

The camp is for youth entering 5th-8th grade and will be held at Goodwill Industries at 2319 E. War Memorial Dr., Peoria on June 17-21 from 9 a.m. to Noon.

Due to the limited number of openings for the camp (25), registration for the program starts with this application process. This online application should be completed by the youth interested in attending 2019 STEM Academy.  Applicants will be selected based on their responses to the questions on the application.

Application deadline is May 1.  Youth will be notified of their acceptance by May 15.

Students will learn about:

  • basic coding/programming skills
  • local STEM Careers
  • problem-solving and design thinking
  • The cost of the STEM Academy is $25.00 per child. Materials provided to the youth during the camp are provided by the generosity of Pearl Technology and far exceed the registration fee for the camp. The camp is provided through a partnership with Pearl Technology, Richwoods Township, and University of Illinois Extension, Fulton-Mason-Peoria-Tazewell Unit. Scholarships are available if needed.

The following link is for forms that need to be filled out and mailed to the Peoria County Extension office, 4810 N. Sheridan Road, Peoria, IL 61614 in order to participate in the event.
